Chromium + Apple Extract uses two unique ingredients that both have a variety of health benefits, individually and when combined together. The Apple Extract in this formula comes from Applephenon, which is sourced from wildcrafted immature green apples known as “mother apples”. These apples have naturally high antioxidant properties. We also use a form of Chromium known as Chromax. Chromax is absorbed up to 15x better than other forms of chromium as evaluated by urinary chromium excretion (1). When combined, Applephenon and Chromax work together to provide benefits to the metabolic system.
A healthy metabolism is reliant upon the efficient metabolism of carbohydrates. Chromax has been clinically shown to promote carbohydrate metabolism by supporting the breakdown of carbohydrates from your food more efficiently. It also helps your body carry glucose to your cells, so you can turn blood sugar into energy.
A study was carried out to investigate the effect of chromium supplementation on blood glucose, HbA(1)C and lipid profile. 40 subjects were selected and the study group received 9g brewer’s yeast (which contains 42 ug Chromium) daily over the course of 3 months, compared with just brewer’s yeast in the control group. Results showed that fasting blood glucose level significantly reduced in the subjects consuming yeast supplemented with chromium. HbA(1)C values improved significantly indicating better glycemic control (2).
In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial, researchers studied the effect of apple polyphenols on glucose tolerance. 65 subjects with a fasting glucose level of 100-125 mg/dL were given tablets containing 600 mg/day of apple polyphenols or given a placebo tablet over 12 weeks. Outcomes were assessed using a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test. The group taking apple polyphenols demonstrated significant reduction in the increase in glucose 30 minutes post oral glucose test (3).

Visceral fat is a type of fatty tissue that is stored deep inside your body, wrapped around multiple organs. While some levels of it are important, having too much of it can have undesirable effects on your health. Factors such as age and genetics can play a role in how much visceral fat an individual has. Studies have shown that apple extract can help lower the percentage of visceral fat in your body.
A randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled clinical trial found that individuals who took 600 mg of ApplePhenon daily experienced a significant reduction in belly fat. The clinical trial involved 94 volunteers. Visceral fat was measured three times: at baseline, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks. After 8 weeks, the reduction in fat was significant (P < 0.05) and after 12 weeks, the reduction in fat was even more significant (P < 0.01) (1).
Another study tested ApplePhenon against hops, another product containing polyphenols. The study involved 71 individuals and took place over a 12-week period. These individuals were moderately obese. After 12 weeks, only ApplePhenon decreased visceral fat, hops was not effective in decreasing visceral fat (2).

Maintaining healthy levels of muscle mass has several benefits. Muscle mass is the amount of soft muscle tissue in your body. It includes smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and skeletal muscle. During weight loss, some individuals may inadvertently lose water weight or muscle. Research has shown that chromium works with your body to direct glucose from the bloodstream into your muscles and helps your body burn fat, instead of muscle, as fuel. This results in maintenance of muscle mass and less muscle loss during periods of weight loss.
One study found that football players who were given 200 mcg Chromax chromium picolinate for 42 days while weight training showed an increase in lean body mass compared to the placebo group by 44%. After 42 days of exercise and chromium supplementation, lean body mass had increased by 2.6 kg and body composition had increased from 84.2% to 87.8% lean mass (1).
In another study, body weight of the men who consumed Chromax chromium picolinate (1.6 mg chromium picolinate equalling 200 micrograms pure chromium) for 40 days increased significantly by 2.2 kg and there was a slight but not significant increase in percent fat. The lean body mass of the participants given Chromax chromium picolinate increased significantly by 1.6 kg. Thus, approximately 73% of the increase in body weight was due to an increase in lean body mass. The increase in lean body mass of the men given Chromax chromium picolinate was greater than that of those given placebo (2).

In one study, 65 healthy male and female subjects were randomly chosen to receive either 600 mg/day ApplePhenon or placebo tablets for 12 weeks. Evaluations, including physical assessment and blood work, were performed at baseline, 4 weeks, and 12 weeks. ApplePhenon improved the lipid profile of subjects. Results showed that ApplePhenon helped in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels (1).
Another study both tested both humans and mice and found similar results in both. This study showed that ApplePhenon affects triglyceride absorption in both mice and 6 healthy male volunteers. Both were given 600 mg ApplePhenon and triglycerides were also administered. Results showed ApplePhenon inhibited triglyceride absorption. The humans and mice taking ApplePhenon did not show an increase in blood triglyceride levels (2).
